The trek through Jatiluwih turned out to be more physical than our guests expected, with a few sections of narrow raised path between the flooded terraces, but the pace was easy to adjust and we stopped often for photos along the way. By the time we reached the highest viewpoint on the route, the whole valley of green terraces was visible below, and it was clear why this particular stretch of rice fields earned its UNESCO recognition.
The temperature dropped noticeably as we climbed toward Bedugul and later Munduk, and our guests were glad to have brought a light jacket for the visit to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, where the cooler mountain air and the mist rising off the lake gave the whole scene a very different atmosphere from the warmer stops earlier in the day.
