Blimbing sits further from the main tourist circuit than better-known rice terraces like Tegalalang or Jatiluwih, and that distance is part of what keeps it quiet. Walking the narrow paths between terraces, the couple could hear farmers working in the distance and see the layered fields stretching down the hillside without another visitor in sight, a contrast they mentioned themselves after the more crowded temples they had already seen elsewhere in Bali. Comfortable closed shoes made the uneven, sometimes muddy paths easier to manage than the sandals they had planned to wear.
Sunset timing at Tanah Lot shifts by close to an hour across the year, so we planned the arrival time around the season of their visit rather than a fixed clock time, giving the couple enough margin to walk the temple grounds at low tide before the crowds gathered for sunset itself. Low tide also meant they could walk right up to the base of the rock the temple sits on, something that is not possible when the tide is in and the causeway is underwater.
Batu Bolong in the evening has a noticeably different atmosphere from its daytime surf crowd, with the beachfront restaurants lighting candles along the sand and the sound of the waves taking over once the sun goes down. Sitting low on the traditional mattresses with dinner in front of them, the couple lingered well past their meal simply enjoying the breeze, which is often how a day that started with an early highland drive ends up finishing without either of them checking the time.
